Pilates Classes and 1:1s in Herne Hill and West Norwood

Welcome to Nicole Arend Pilates, I run small and friendly Pilates classes and mixed equipment 1:1s in Dulwich, Herne Hill and West Norwood.

Classes are flowing and small so that clients still receive individual attention. Equipment such as stretch bands, over balls, magic circles and hand weights is often incorporated to add variety, assist certain exercises or to add challenge to others. 1:1s are held in my studio and make use of the mat, tower, spine corrector and reformer to help achieve specific needs or goals.

Most people taking classes will see and feel a change in their core strength relatively quickly and will be enjoying the full intermediate classical mat with all its benefits within a year.  1:1s achieve results even faster as the reformer and the tower use resistance to increase strength and mobility. Specialist classes such as Bone Health build up strength over a longer period of time but the results are just as effective.

What Does Pilates Do?

Pilates is famous for building core strength and maintaining a healthy spine.  It will definitely do both of those things but it is also a full body exercise system that improves all over strength and mobility.  Its emphasis on precise alignment and quality of movement conditions the entire musculature, rebalancing muscles that may have been thrown out of kilter by lifestyle or injury.

Perfect Posture • Strong Core • Healthy Spine
Increased Mobility • Mental Wellbeing

Pilates teaches an awareness of core strength and correct posture that can be incorporated into all other aspects of life from sitting correctly at a desk to running a marathon. Whatever your sport, Pilates will enhance it, helping you to remain injury free.

Proper breathing and mindful movement are also an important part of Pilates. In both classes and 1:1s a mind-body connection is created that is deeply relaxing and rejuvenating.

Joseph Pilates summed up the benefits of doing Pilates in a famous quote: In ten sessions you will feel a difference, in 2o sessions you will see a difference, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body.”

Nicole is the most nurturing instructor who respects the frailties of her clients, while encouraging them to stretch themselves a little further each session. Our successes are her successes. She replaces any performance fear with fun and the impact on my fragile mental health has been profound.

About Me

I discovered Pilates 20 years ago and trained with internationally renowned Body Control Pilates and the Lisa B Academy. I am passionate about Pilates and sharing its benefits with as many people as possible!

The effectiveness and the adaptability of the Pilates repertoire for different needs never ceases to amaze me.  I particularly enjoy seeing clients improve and the ultimate pleasure is watching a class of once total beginners or an individual in a 1:1 executing flowing sequences with beautiful form and control.

Class Descriptions

Healthy Backs

Healthy Backs, Stretch and Restore classes are taught at a slower pace with an emphasis on lengthening and mobilising the spine.
The focus is on moving with intention and finding deep core strength connections to support the spine. Restores both mind and body.

Level 1-2

Level 1-2 is for those who have done some Pilates before. The pace is moderate and the focus is on strengthening the core, correcting body alignment, re-balancing muscles and improving posture.

Classical Pilates Level 2

The classical mat is a series of 34 exercises developed by Joseph Pilates and performed in a faster paced, flowing sequence. Each exercise transitions into the next, gradually building in difficulty, developing core strength and stamina.

Pilates for Bone Health

Focuses on core strength, good posture and alignment, but includes more repititions to help to maintain or build bone density. It is particularly suitable for people with Osteopenia and level 2 Osteoporosis.

Reformer 1:1s

The Reformer was designed by Joseph Pilates to increase strength and mobility using resistance. It can be used as a tool for safe rehab after injury or to achieve amazing improvements in all over body and core strength.

1:1s, Beginners & High Intensity Power (HIP) Pilates

1:1s are brilliant for beginners, for people with specific issues or injuries, and for those who are initially intimidated by larger classes. They often result in faster progress with exercises tailored to individual needs. Many people find an hour of personal attention in which they are allowed to focus on their own body more useful than years of classes.

High Intensity Power (HIP) Pilates is intended to bridge the gap between Cardio workouts and Pilates. Whilst retaining the principles of Pilates such as alignment and core stability it aims to raise the heart rate. Small hand weights are used in conjunction with sequences of lunges, squats and plank variations. It ends with core strengthening exercises on the mat and stretching. It is excellent for cardiovascular health, burning calories and bone health.
